The Manifesto states at its beginning: « We live in a time of unprecedented advances in science and technology. The world is ever more globalised and interconnected. Consider the cauliflower. The cauliflowers we eat now tend to be big, white and fluffy. They have been bred this way over the last 30 years, taking the place of the various Italian varieties that were once bred on farms. Europe has largely forgotten the other possible shapes, colours – green, yellow, pink and purple – and flavours of cauliflowers. Les sciences se nourrissent de la diversité. A mesure que les enjeux liés à la soutenabilité, la pauvreté, la santé et la sécurité deviennent de plus en plus prégnants, les sciences et l’innovation ont besoin de se construire à partir de la diversité des formes de savoirs, des pratiques variées et de gens différents. En même temps, les motivations privées en faveur des sciences ont elles aussi grandement pris du poids, plus que celles qui sont mues par l’intérêt général, la curiosité, les valeurs et les besoins. Il est temps pour les scientifiques de reconnecter leurs travaux et leurs expertises en leur faisant jouer un plus grand rôle dans la société, celui de Scientifiques Citoyens.
