Introduction

In March 2006 the Heinrich Boell Foundation and the Institut Mensch, Ethik und Wissenschaft invited representatives of local and international civil society to a working conference to discuss the profound challenges of the new human genetic technologies and the need for social controls according to basic values. Its purpose was to exchange views on the issues raised by the new human genetic technologies, to learn from each other and to lay further groundwork for connecting European civil society.
